The 60-year-old suffered head injuries as well as a broken right arm after he was struck by a car at Jalan Datuk Amar Kalong Ningkan near the Mile 3 flyover, around 6.30pm.

Ghani was having a meal at a shop at Sungai Maong bazaar and was crossing the road back to his house when the incident occurred.

An eyewitness said that the former STU president was knocked down by a white Proton Iswara which then got onto the flyover and sped off towards Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce.

Several motorists stopped to assist the unconscious Ghani by first moving him to the shoulder of the road before calling for an ambulance.

He was subsequently sent to the Sarawak General Hospital and admitted into the Red Zone, where his condition is described as serious.
