Sabah Wildlife Department deputy director Dr Sen Nathan said the monitor lizard crawled into the pool on Sunday afternoon, believed to cool itself.

The Wildlife Rescue Unit (WRU) was immediately notified and arrived at the resort around half an hour later after receiving the distress call.

The monitor lizard was rescued by WRU personnel in 20 minutes and was released at the Kawang Forest Reserve yesterday morning.

Dr Sen said monitor lizards can be dangerous, referring to the eight-month-old baby girl who received 50 stitches after being bitten and clawed in the face by a large monitor lizard in Pulau Tioman in September this year.

Fortunately no one at Langkah Syabas Beach Resort was harmed in the process.
