Gang of five hits van, injures occupants

KUCHING: A lorry driver and his two friends were injured after a gang attacked them at Rock Road here yesterday.

The three had just finished supper at a 24-hour coffee shop in Mile 3, and were travelling along Rock Road in a van around 3am when their vehicle got blocked by four motorcycles.

According to the lorry driver, five strangers surrounded the van and began hitting it using a piece of wood.

“They smashed the windscreen and windows, which got us sustain cuts from the shattered glass.

“Fortunately, I was able to accelerate the van past the motorcycles.

“We later sought treatment at Sarawak General Hospital,” the van driver said, who went to lodge a police report on the incident afterwards.

In a separate incident, a man sustained injuries on his body and legs in an accident along Mile 8 Kuching-Serian Road yesterday.

The 20-something, who was alone, was heading towards Mile 9 when he lost control of his car and crashed into the roadside.

The 1.30am incident left the driver pinned to his seat, and required the assistance of Fire and Rescue personnel, who came later after receiving a distress call, to extricate him.

The victim was sent to Sarawak General Hospital immediately afterwards.
