KUCHING: The Pre-University Graduation and Appreciation ceremony held by SMK (Bahasa Malaysia) Saratok in Saratok on Wednesday saw 108 students receiving their certificates to mark the end of their three-term pre-university programme.

Another 126 students received their certificates for completing either first or second pre-university terms. Awards were also given to prefects and students for their excellence in co-curriculum activities.

Nuraini Suparman and Wan Ahmad Qhairul Wan Azeman were declared ‘Tokoh Kokurikulum’ while head prefect Mohd Haziq Ismail was named ‘Tokoh Pelajar Pra-Universiti 2014’.

Dayang Fauziah Abang Ahet, Fiona Balan, Mark Brandon Melawi and Rosnani Omar were awarded YB Datuk Abdul Wahab Aziz’s ‘Anugerah Galakan Khas’.

Wahab is Kalaka assemblyman and Assistant Land Development Minister.

Representing Social Development Minister Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom to give away the certificates was political secretary to the chief minister Peter Howell Jilan.

In his text of speech, read by Howell, Mawan said the government would intensify efforts to improve the development of education, and one of the ways was the implementation of the pre-university programme to replace Lower and Upper Six classes, which is modelled on the matriculation course of pre-university colleges.

Mawan added the programme was part of the government’s 2013-2025 plan on transformation of education, and the new system would allow for flexibility in many aspects for students’ overall development.

Howell announced a pledge of RM5,000 from Mawan, who is also Saratok MP, to the school’s ‘Majlis Perwakilan Pelajar Pra-Universiti’.

Also present were SMK (BM) Saratok senior principal assistant Kambli Zulkifli, Pre-Universiti senior principal assistant Dom Nambi Sabai, local heads of government departments and community leaders as well as parents and teachers.
