KUCHING: Former Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) president William Ghani Bina passed away yesterday, three days after he was hit by a car while crossing the road at Mile 3 here.

He was 60.

The veteran educator, who retired from teaching last year, breathed his last around 6.30pm at the Intensive Care Unit of Sarawak General Hospital, where he had been warded for severe head injuries following the incident on Wednesday.

It is reported that Ghani had a meal at Sungai Maong bazaar and was walking back to his house at Hua Joo Park around 6.30pm when he was knocked down by a car.

The male driver initially sped off from the scene but later lodged a police report on the incident.

It is learnt through Ghani’s daughter Serina Lim that the driver had visited the family at the hospital to apologise over the accident, which they accepted.

Current STU president Jisin Nyud expressed his grief over Ghani’s passing, adding that he was shocked to hear about it as he had just visited his predecessor at the hospital earlier.

“We have lost a very good union leader. On a personal note, he was my mentor,” said Jisin.

Ghani presided over STU for 21 years before stepping down last year. He is survived by his wife Eileen and daughters Serina and Melina.

The funeral wake will be held at the family’s house at 112, Lorong 4A1, Hua Joo Park here, at 7.30pm today.

The funeral will be held at SIB Church Iris Garden at 9.30am tomorrow.
