KUCHING: Concerns were raised yesterday over the choice of Kuching as the venue for the inaugural meeting of the Women wing of Ikatan Muslimim Malaysia (Isma), which started on Friday and ended yesterday.

This is because of the general feeling that Isma, along with Perkasa, should not have been allowed to hold activities in Sarawak due to their extremist views.

Held at a hotel here, the meeting was officiated by Isma Women chief Norsaleha Mohd Salleh. Also in attendance were central committee members and women chiefs nationwide.

A local, who was at the hotel, said he felt suspicious about the meeting because most of the participants seemed to be from the peninsula. “Why choose Sarawak as the venue?” he posed.

Isma president Abdullah Zaik Abdul Rahman was recently charged under the Sedition Act after making a controversial remark against the Chinese community.

The Kajang Sessions court on Oct 13 allowed a postponement of the sedition trial after Abdullah Zaik’s lawyer said they wanted to wait for a decision in the case of law professor Dr Azmi Sharom, who is challenging the constitutionality of the Sedition Act.
