‘Skills, capability complement academics in entering job market’

MIRI: Academic qualification such as degrees – on its own – is only as good as a ‘passport’ for graduates to gain entry into employment.

Dayang Enterprise Holdings Sdn Bhd (DEHSB) executive deputy chairman Datuk James Ling said while it was vital for students to have education, they must also demonstrate their capability and develop themselves in order to become valuable assets of any organisation that they joined after finishing their studies.

“You must have a good working attitude and be able to work as a team. At the same time, you must also understand the vision and mission (of the company) and believe in what it is striving to achieve,” he reminded students attending IBS College Prom Night 2014 here recently.

Ling, who came at the event as the guest-of-honour, said it was a wrong perception by graduates thinking that the salary must be lucrative enough to justify their academic qualifications.

On another subject, Ling said colleges and universities had been functioning beyond being the place to impart knowledge and skills to students towards attaining successful careers.

“These places play an integral part in society. The right education helps mold a stronger and more united society. They also help young individuals become well-rounded adults,” said Ling, adding that it was crucial for students to not only be responsible people, but also able to network well and have good social skills.

In this context, he urged students to make full use of their time in colleges.

Also present at the function was principal and chief executive officer of IBS College, Dr Antony Hii.
