MIRI: Lau Cheng Leong from Sibu Golf Club emerged overall champion of the two-day TYT Tun Pehin Sri Hj (Dr) Abdul Taib Mahmud Merdeka Cup Challenge Trophy at Miri Golf Club (KGM) which ended yesterday.
Lau also won the Men 36 Holes Gross category with 157 on count back (OCB), followed by Mohd Lokman (first-runner-up) and Abdul Rahim (second-runner-up).
In the Men 36 Holes Nett, the winner was Aizat Muhammad Innadi while Othman Marahaban was first-runner-up and Asa Laba was second-runner-up.
In the Ladies 36 Holes Gross, the winner was Alethia Cordelia, followed by Eliza Mae Kho at the second place and Jacyln Chen at the third place.
The Ladies 36 Holes Net winner meanwhile was Muren Wan followed by Sarah Jane as first-runner-up.
Also held was the Invited Guests category which was won by Datuk Alexander Maiyor.
All the prizes were presented to the respective winners by Head of State Tun Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Toh Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi.
A total of 95 golfers took part in the various categories of the tournament which was sanctioned by Sarawak Golf Association (SGA) and open to golfers from Miri, Sibu and Bintulu who handicap index is 15.9 for men and 21.2 for ladies.
Among those present were Miri Golf Club president Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri George Chan Hong Nam, Minister of Local Government and Community Development Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh and wife Datin Seri Leong Poh Lin, Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis and Miri Golf Club captain Ivan Pui.
