M’sia bag a gold on final day of FINA Grand Prix

KUALA LUMPUR: The national diving contingent finally bagged a gold medal on the last day of the Malaysian leg of the FINA World Grand Prix at the National Aquatics Centre here yesterday.

Nur Dhabitah Sabri and Ng Yan Yee did Malaysia proud by winning it in the women’s 3m spring board synchronised after collecting 274.41 points.

The silver also went to Malaysia after Jasmine Lai Pui Yee and Kam Ling Kar scored 267.51 points while Deidre Freeman and Maren Taylor of the United States had to settle for the bronze with 259.80 points.

Nur Dhabitah and Loh Zhiayi then went on to win the bronze medal in the 10m platform synchronised after accumulating 293.67 points.

The Chinese pair of Ji Siyu and Si Yajie won the gold (332.70 points)  while Malaysia’s Pandelela Rinong and Cheong Jun Hoong picked up the silver (327.84) points.

However, national elite diver Ooi Tze Liang could only manage the bronze in the men’s individual 10m platform after scoring 448.60 points while compatriot Chew Yi Wei finished in fifth place out of six competitiors with 397.35 points.

Huo Liang of China continued the “Great Wall’s” domination in the event by winning the gold medal with 532.30 points. Toby Stanley of the US took the silver with 456.25 points.

Youth and Sports Minister Khairy Jamaluddin gave away the medals to the winners.

Nur Dhabitah, when met by reporters afterwards, dedicated her victory to her parents, Fazidah Jaafar and Sabri Hashim, who were present to give moral support.

“I am a bit dissapointed we did not collect more points in the 3m springboard synchronised. It was due to mistakes in the initial rounds,” said the student of the Bukit Jalil Sports School here.

Besides Malaysia, who are hosting this ninth and final leg of the championship, the other countries in the competition are Georgia, Cuba, China, United States , Hong Kong, Canada, Australia and Colombia.

The earlier legs were held in Madrid (January), Rostock, Germany (February); Gatineau, Canada; San Juan, Puerto Rico and Guanajuato, Mexico (all three in May), Bolzano, Italy (August) and Singapore (earlier this month).  — Bernama
