Drastic rise in dengue cases over last year

KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 82,738 dengue cases with 157 deaths were reported in the country this year up to Oct 18, up from 26,527 cases with 59 deaths over the corresponding period last year, according to the Health Ministry.

Director-General of Health Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah said yesterday the rise in the number of cases occurred in nine states, namely Selangor, Melaka, Terengganu, Penang, Perak, Kelantan, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang and Johor and the federal territories of Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya.

He said in a statement that between January and Oct 11 this year, 3,996,612 premises throughout the country were inspected and 13,013 fines totalling over RM6 million were imposed.

He also said that the week beginning Oct 12 saw an increase of 19 per cent in the number of cases, 2,160 compared to 1,822 in the previous week.

There were also four deaths, two of them in Perak and one each in Terengganu and Kuala Lumpur, in the latest week, he added. — Bernama
