Sabah, Miri players to compete in Bintulu taekwondo tourney

BINTULU: About 260 Taekwondo exponents from clubs in Sarawak and Sabah will be competing in the 8th Best of the Best Smart Bintulu Taekwondo WTF Championship 2014 on November 1 and 2 at 

Dewan Sukan SJK Chung Hua Bintulu.

According to organising chairperson Dayang Sapura Awang Mahmood, this was the first time participants from Miri and Sabah would be taking part in the annual tournament.

She said with the participation of exponents from outside Bintulu would give exposure for the local participants..

“From Bintulu we have selected about 190 participants,” she said.

Sapura added the main objective of the event was to scout for new talents who had the potential to represent the state and country in future tournaments.

“For the first time we will be using the Electronic Scoring System for this year’s tournament which is used at the international level and we are also inviting national referees,” she said.

The opening ceremony on November 1 at 1.30pm is expected to be officiated by Bintulu Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.

It will be divided into two events namely Sparring and Poomsae for junior and senior categories.

The tournament is jointly organised by Smart Taekwondo Club and State Sports Council in collaboration with the Youth and Sports Department.

Also present during the briefing on Monday evening were Sarawak Taekwondo Association (WTF) vice president cum club chairman Raja Zahari Raja Yusof, Paul Ikom Augustine of Sarawak Sports Council Bintulu Division, head coach Pui Jak Joon, club officials and parents.
