KUALA LUMPUR: Universiti Malaya (UM) has lodged a police report over a trespass and an illegal gathering at the campus on Monday night.

UM Media and Corporate Unit head Izzad Zalman Abd Kader with security director Yusof Harun and security officer Khairul Anuar Abu Shari lodged the report at the Pantai Police Station here at 11am.

After spending two hours lodging the report, Izzad Zalman told reporters, participants of the gathering had barged into UM, causing the main gate to collapse, and held a rally at Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor.

“The gathering was held illegally at Dataran Dewan Tunku Canselor. Nobody can intrude or hold an event without securing UM’s permission first,” he said.

He also said an internal investigation would be conducted by UM on its students who were involved in the gathering Monday night under the Universities and University Colleges Act 1971 and the constitution of the university.

“The results of the inquiry will be announced via a media statement soon,” he said.

In the incident, about 300 youths, including students of institutions of higher learning, barged through the main gate of UM at 9.20pm to attend a talk by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which was purportedly scheduled at the hall.

The programme did not obtain the prior approval of the university and its security unit had locked the main gate. — Bernama
