Woman jailed nine years for drug possession

TAWAU: A 42-year-old woman was sentenced to nine years’ jail by the Sessions Court here yesterday for possessing 37.12 grams of drug.

Sessions judge Ummu Kalthom Abd Samad meted out the sentence on Sitti Nurkiya binti Aldam who was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which provides life imprisonment or not less than five years and whipping of not less that ten strokes.

The accused committed the offence on January 27 at about 6.30pm along the roadside in front of Kedai Sony Active Electronics Trading Co, Tun Hamdan Road. She tried to run away when stopped by policemen but was caught. The drug, methamphetamine, was found inside the handbag she was carrying.

Meanwhile, a 23-year-old Indonesian illegal immigrant was sentenced to 60 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for house-breaking.

Magistrate Harith Mohd Mazalan meted out the sentence on Burhan bin Syamsuddin who was charged under Section 457 of the Penal Code which provides for 14 years’ imprisonment and also carries a fine and whipping for the second offence.

The accused committed the offence with three others still at large on September 2 at about 3am. They broke into an unnumbered house at Sungai Imam that belongs to Sudiana binti Maidin, 34, and stole a 40-inch Toshiba television set worth RM1,300.

Police acting on information caught the accused on October 2 at 6.11pm at Kampung Pagar, Sungai Imam, Bombalai.

The Magistrate’s Court also sentenced a 23-year-old local man to 18 months’ jail and fined him RM20,000, in default, 12 months’ imprisonment for possession of a stolen vehicle.

Magistrate Harith meted out the sentence on Misnansyah bin Pannuso who was charged under Section 411 of the Penal Code which provides a minimum six months’ imprisonment and not more than five years and can be fined.

The accused committed the offence on October 18 this year at about 12.30pm at a house at Taman Da Hua 6, Jalan Bunga Raya. He was in possession of a Toyota Land Cruiser worth about RM400,000 that belongs to Syarikat Sri Jomatsu Sdn Bhd. The vehicle was reported stolen on October 19.

He was caught on October 21 at about 1.45pm in front of Pasaraya Rakyat, Jalan Masjid, while trying to sell the vehicle to an undercover policeman. The vehicle was recovered at Flat PPR Taman Semarak.
