‘Don’t box-in civil servants, creativity needs flexibility’

SIBU: Civil servants ought to be given flexibility to make and implement their own decisions, and given reasonable allocations to inculcate the practise of creative thinking.

Cuepacs Sarawak division expressed optimism that civil servants could think and act outside the box if the element is given to them.

“Ironically, although the government had advocated this policy, as long as civil servants are not given flexibility and appropriate allocation, it is not easy for it to become a reality.

“Perhaps, there is thinking outside the box, but limited. Hence, Cuepacs Sarawak division urged the government to issue a circular, particularly in relation to rules and regulations which could facilitate civil servants to think and act out of the box to generate innovative action,” its secretary Ahmad Malie, who is also KGBS president said yesterday.

He was reacting to a Bernama report, quoting Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as advising civil servants to think and act out of the box, saying they should come up with creative ideas for innovative action.

Muhyiddin also reportedly said they should be brave enough to challenge the status quo and move away from the conventional approach.

Muhyiddin was further quoted as saying department heads should also be more creative in providing various platforms for the generation of new ideas.

The Deputy Prime Minister suggested that several approaches could be worked out by the department heads, like having brainstorming sessions, providing opportunities for staff to attend training and giving incentives and recognition to those who helped bring about positive changes.

Ahmad assured in principle that they welcome and support the call made by Muhyiddin.
