KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has traced 172 illegal online gambling websites in the country.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Multimedia Datuk Jailani Johari said the MCMC had been directed to take immediate action against these websites.

It also proposed that the Home Ministry conduct an integrated operation with all related parties, including with the local authorities.

“The ministry urges local authorities not to help issue new licences to cyber centres,” he told reporters after presenting the MSC Malaysia APICTA Awards 2014, at Angkasapuri, here yesterday.

Jailani said this in response to calls from various parties for immediate action to curb illegal online gambling which has become rampant in recent years.

At the Dewan Rakyat on Wednesday, several members of parliament (MPs) called on the MCMC to set up a special unit to address illegal online gambling.

The Attorney-General’s Chambers plans to submit a proposal to the government to amend the existing act or create a new act to curb illegal online gambling. — Bernama
