KOTA KINABALU: Construction work for the three schools that were burnt earlier this year is expected to begin early next year.

The schools involved are SK Pekan Kiulu in Tuaran, SK Gadong in Beaufort and SK Bawang in Tamparuli.

According to State Education Director, Datuk Jame Alip, they were waiting for the tender documents to be compiled by another government department and were expecting this to be completed by next month.

“We are optimistic that construction work will be able to start early next year,” he told reporters in a press conference at Wisma Pendidikan yesterday.

He said that they have to depend on outside help for the preparation of the tender papers as the department did not have specialized staff to carry out the work.

He also said that the department had already received a warrant for 10 vacant positions and were waiting for these positions to be filled up. The vacant posts includes a civil engineer and a surveyor.

He was also asked to comment on whether the construction work of SK Tampasak in Kinarut would start soon following the announcement of the approval of RM20 million budget for the schools.

“We are still waiting. We have already submitted our application,” he said.

At the same time, Jame also mentioned briefly about SMK Kundasang and said that the school had been closed due to danger.

He said that a site at Mesilou in Ranau had been identified and that it would involve RM5 million to build it.

“But I don’t have any further information,” he said.
