I hope the event will bring good sales,” he told reporters after opening the carnival yesterday. He said the ‘Sarawak Kitchen’ area was the highlight of the event with 20 stalls selling various food from Sarawak such as Mee Kolok, Mee Jawa, salted terubok and Sarawak Laksa. “A total of 100 booths are open – 60 booths sel ling products from Sarawak and the rest holding exhibitions by numerous government agencies,” he said.

Jabu said the event could become a platform to boost ties between the communities in Sarawak and peninsular Malaysia by sharing the unique heritage and culture via performances. A statement from the Carnival Organising Committee Publicity Bureau said the programme was mooted in 2008 to gather Sarawakborn residents of peninsular Malaysia.

It was initially held on a small scale by inviting the residents to dinners, and their number increased each year. As such, the statement said, the event was held on a larger scale this year in the form of a festival, from 10am to 10pm, in the grounds of the stadium. Numerous interesting events such as exhibitions, cultural shows, spiritual forums and entrepreneurship forums were also being held during the festival.

The organising chairman of the carnival this year is Women, Family and Community Development Minister Datuk Seri Rohani Abdul Karim. A total of 10,000 Sarawakborn residents of peninsular Malaysi a a re expec ted to at tend a dinner tonight in conjunction with the carnival. — Bernama
