Police to upgrade SOP for firearms licence application

JOHOR BAHARU: The Royal Malaysian Police (PDRM) are in the process of improving the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the application of licence for firearms to meet increasing demand.

Acting deputy Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohamad Fuzi Harun said police often faced complaints from security companies or individuals who claimed the application process took a long time.

“We will try to find a way to solve this issue. Issues like request of security companies for ‘carry and use’ will also be given attention,” he said after opening a Bukit Aman and Royal Malaysian Police Contingent Firearms Licencing Officers Conference, here yesterday.

Mohamad Fuzi who is also PDRM Management Department director, hoped a clear guideline could
be set during the conference, in the interest of police and the society.

He said there were more than 900 firearm licencing personnel nationwide, involving rank-and-file and officers, to boost compliance on the use of firearms by security companies and individuals.

Fuzi said this was in line with the increase in applications for firearms, especially from security companies, following prolific development activities nationwide. — Bernama
