State volleyball may skip nationals if controversy surrounding MVA remains unsolved, says chief

SIBU: The Sarawak Volleyball Association (SVA) have yet to hear any explanation regarding alleged irregularities surrounding the recent election for office-bearers of the Malaysia Volleyball Association (Mava).

On this, SVA president Dr William Ting believed the state squad might even have to skip the national meet scheduled by end of this year if they were not presented with a satisfactory response on the results of the election.

“Our participation in the national championships will very much depend on the outcome. So far, Mava have not come up with any explanation,” said Ting, who also heads Sibu Volleyball Association.

He felt that there was a serious flaw in the election process for office-bearers for the 2014-2015 term, which saw Dr Gregory Hii of SVA and Datuk Seri Low Jee Kiong drawing a tie for the presidency of the national body.

As a result, Mava deputy president Datuk Chai Kim Sen – who presided over the annual general meeting – cast the deciding vote in favour of Low.

“SVA regard the act as against Mava’s constitution, seeing that Chai himself was contesting for the deputy president’s post.

“As I said before, we (SVA) have written a complaint to the Sports Commissioner demanding a probe over the matter but till today, we have not heard anything,” Ting said.

Nevertheless, he said SVA would still hold selection for outstanding players to be included into the state squad.

“We will pick those who perform excellently during the Sarawak Under-14 and Under-16 Volleyball Championships to be held at Rejang Park Volleyball Court in Sibu next week,” he
said, adding that as hosts, they would send their Boys and Girls teams for the state-level competition.

The six-day tournament will see 21 teams from here, Kuching, Mukah, Miri, Sarikei, Meradong and Limbang vying for a place in the state squad.

Ting is expected to declare the championships open at 5.45pm on Nov 6, while Temenggong Vincent Lau will officiate at the closing at 7pm on Nov 11.
