KUCHING: Two national cyclists gave the boost to the SBS Giant Racing Team to win the Cross Country Team Relay (XCR) as well as nabbing the Mayor’s Challenge Trophy yesterday.

The team, which featured Muhammad Fauzan Ahmad Lutfi and Masziyaton Mohd Radzi, also included Muhammad Khairul Aniq and Tan Chee Yong.

The second place was won by the Sonamu-Saxon team while third place went to the Sofomas team.

Fauzan was somewhat surprised when he emerged as champion of the first Cross Country Team Relay (XCR), the first time the competition was held at the Siol Mountain Bike XC Challenge.

“The track for this category is extremely challenging and I was not expecting to emerge as the winner,” he said.

Meanwhile, Kuching North City Commision (DBKU) mayor Datuk Abang Abdul Wahap Abang Julai expressed his hope that the mountain bike challenge could be included in the Asia Circuit.

“This is important to attract international cyclists as well as promote Kuching as a sports destination. A lot of the cyclists have described the challenging and natural track as suitable for international races,” Abdul Wahap said, adding that the prize money for the next edition would be increased and offered in American dollars.

The two-day championship, which is into its 10th year, involved three main categories: MTB Time Trail, Downhill and Cross Country (XC), with overall cash prizes worth RM38,450.
