Five ‘Best Graduates’ scoop SAINS cash prize of RM2,000

KUCHING: Five students from the Faculty of Computer Science and Information Technology (FCSIT), University Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) received the Best Graduate Award 2014 that came with a RM2,000 cash prize.

The prizes sponsored by Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (SAINS) were presented to the winners by the chief executive officer of SAINS, Datuk Teo Tien Hiong in a ceremony yesterday.

The recipients of the awards were Lay Foong Yee who obtained a Bachelor in Computer Science in Multimedia Computing, Ian Charles Mius obtained the same degree, specialising in software engineering and Tan Sier Lie in Network Computing.

Wong Ji Yeh received the Computational Science Award and Sia Kie Yung the Information Systems Award.

Wong, a 24-year-old Johorean, also received the Pro Chancellor’s Award.

When met by The Borneo Post after the graduation ceremony, Wong said his secret to success was to work hard, pray hard and not forget to do good deeds.

Although Unimas was not his first choice, he soon find out that its computer course as of high standard.

“The equipment was up-to-date and we were guided by skilled lecturers. I believe that those who excel in Unimas will have a bright future in the job market,” he said.

He is currently working as a system analyst with a private IT firm in Singapore.

A total of 1,547 graduates received their scrolls on the last day of the graduation ceremony yesterday.

The three-day convocation ceremony from Nov 1 saw a total of 3,240 graduates receive their scrolls.
