TAWAU: Several motorists including hawkers have claimed that their vehicles parked at the 100th Anniversary of Sabindo open space (behind Quang Ming bookstore) here were stolen in previous months.

The 100th Anniversary of Sabindo open space (temporary car park).

The open space had been converted into a temporary car park by the local council to overcome the shortage of parking lots in the township here and has brought much convenience to motorists who are working or visiting to the area, including hawkers and shoppers who go to Tanjung market.

However, several car theft cases have happened at the open space in previous months, worrying motorists who frequently park their cars there.

A hawker who sells bean curds at Tanjung market said her Vigo which was parked at the open space was stolen during day time last month and has still not been recovered until today.

“I parked my car there at about 6am daily to operate my business at Tanjung market and was shocked to find my car missing after business hours at noon.

“Instead of charging RM3 per entry, I hope the local council could enhance the security at the open space such as allocating a few of security guards there,” she suggested.

The police and local council have been strongly urged to look into this matter seriously and take immediate action for the safely of motorists here.

The open space carpark is located nearby the Tanjung market and is accessible from the dual carriageway. The area had been proposed as designated parking lots for Tanjung market but until today there is still no action taken.

It was learnt that the proposed open space would be under the Tanjung market construction project. An overhead bridge had also been proposed to link the Tanjung market and the open space (parking lots). However, the Tanjung market had been completed in 1990 but the open space has yet to be developed.

The community here also hopes that the parking lot project could be developed to overcome the parking shortage problem in Tawau. The parking lots and overhead bridge to Tanjung market would enable road users to have a conducive parking environment and smoothen traffic flow along Jalan Dunlop here.
