TAWAU: Almost all secondary schools (SMK) throughout Tawau have set up their own cooperatives in the schools to enhance financial literacy and hands-on practice among the students particularly in cooperative operation.

Malaysia Deputy Education Minister Datuk Mary Yap Kain Ching said it was highly relevant to set up a cooperative in each secondary school where the students could benefit from cooperative activities.

She also expressed hope  that all secondary schools here would have a cooperative in their respective schools in the future.

Mary, who is also the Tawau member of parliament cum the president of Tawau parliamentary cooperative consultation council, urged the remaining schools do establish their own cooperatives as soon as possible in order to focus on financial literacy under the Malaysia Education Blueprint.

She said this when officiating at a cooperative awareness programme  at SJKC Sin Hwa Datuk Lau Hall here yesterday.

“Such cooperative awareness programme aims to boost a healthy collaboration, positive impact and useful perceptions among the cooperative operators.

It would also be a holistic awareness programme to improve the economic level of the community.”

She also encouraged the youngsters and women in Tawau to set up their own cooperatives.
