LABUAN: The Ministry of Federal Territories is lobbying for a speedy expansion of the Urban Transformation Centre (UTC) in Labuan.

The centre, with the concept of utilising existing building for low cost houses and the fast completion of construction period, is the government’s effort and initiative to provide core services to the urban community under one roof.

Its secretary-general Datuk Adnan Md Ikhsan said the ministry had identified the suitable building to be transformed into UTC and this would be forwarded to the Ministry of Finance (MOF) for approval. He said a subdivision of the newly-completed Labuan Market Complex at Ujung Pasir, here would be proposed for the UTC, which is being located within the people-concentrated area of bus and taxi terminal, wet market and shopping centre.

“We hope the MOF will consider expanding the UTC to Labuan, as part of the expansion to establish people-oriented centres to major cities in the country, and as part of the Urban Transformation Program,” he said after a dialogue session with fishmongers, here on Saturday.

Currently most of the government offices are located at the Financial Park Complex, while some are scattered at the outskirts of town.

The UTC, which is a one-stop centre for key federal governments’ transaction, is part of the Blue Ocean Strategy to improve the quality of services through strategic partnerships between government agencies and the private sector.

There are eight UTC in Malaysia with Melaka being the first state to have established the centre. — Bernama
