25th ASEAN Summit in Full Gear, Various Regional Issues Discussed

NAY PYI TAW, MYANMAR: His Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah, the Sultan and the Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam consented to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 25th ASEAN Summit, held at the Myanmar International Convention Centre in Nay Pyi Taw, Republic of the Union of Myanmar, Brudirect reported.

The arrival of His Majesty was welcomed by the President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar, His Excellency U Thein Sein and wife, Madame Daw Khin Khin Win.

The President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar as the Chairman of the 25th ASEAN Summit, in his opening address highlighted the importance of to ensure the realisation of politically cohesive, economically integrated and socially responsible ASEAN Community as well as to further strengthen ASEAN’s external relations aiming to bring mutual benefits to all.

His Excellency also expressed his satisfaction on the accomplishment of two important tasks during 2014 for strengthening ASEAN Institutions in line with ASEAN Charter and formulation of central elements for the ASEAN Community’s Post 2015 Vision.

His Excellency also expressed his satisfaction on the progress of ASEAN which is in line with this year’s theme, ‘Moving Forward in Unity, To a Peaceful and Prosperous Community’.

The President of the Republic of the Union of Myanmar also highlighted future for ASEAN particularly in promoting ASEAN norms and centrality, to broaden ASEAN’s external relations by considering strategic trade and investment partners.

The Monarch then consented to join the Heads of State and Government for a group photo session. During the summit, leaders of ASEAN discussed matters closely related to the theme of the ASEAN Summit this year.

Some of the main agenda discussed include issues towards the realisation of the ASEAN Community in 2015 and the strategic direction of the ASEAN Community Post-2015 as well as Strengthening of the ASEAN institutions.

Accompanying His Majesty were the Minister of Finance II at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Setia Dato Seri Setia Awg Hj Abd Rahman Hj Ibrahim and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade II Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Dewa Dato Seri Setia Lim Jock Seng.
