Liberian ‘footballer’ charged in Terengganu for overstaying

KUALA TERENGGANU: A Liberian man who allegedly came to Terengganu to play football for the state’s ‘T-Team’, was charged in the Sessions Court here yesterday for overstaying in Malaysia.

Luseni Gabriel Smith, 31, claimed trial to staying in the country illegally after expiry of his travel documents.

He was detained at the Kuala Terengganu Municipal Council bus station here on Oct 8 around 9.45am.

Mohd Azhar Othman set Nov 24 for remention pending confirmation from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on the accused’s alleged claim that he was waiting to obtain a UNHCR card.

The accused who has been remanded at Penjara Marang was unrepresented, while deputy public prosecutor Mohd Hafiz Jaafar from the Immigration Department appeared for the prosecution. — Bernama
