SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council is working on the major events that may be included in the Visit Sibu Year 2016 programme.

Council deputy chairman Dato Andrew Wong said it hoped to finalise them by the end of this year.

He said Sibu has much to offer, but it was important to offer tourists something unique which they could not obtain elsewhere.

Meanwhile, Sibu Divisional Tourism Task Group (DTTG) chairman Sim Kok Kee noted that current events attracted mostly local tourists.

“International tourists are still dependent on connectivity, especially air connectivity,” Sim, who is Sibu Resident, said.

He considered the 1Malaysia Food Fair one of the better tourism events that pulled in sizeable crowds.

The annual 1Malaysia Food Fair is hosted by the Federation of Hawkers of Sibu and Meradong, Sibu Central Market Hawkers Association and Sibu Petty Traders Association. It is supported by Sibu Municipal Council.

When officiating at the fair last Saturday, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, who is also Minister of Local Government and Community Development, called on both public and private sectors to work hand-in-hand to come up with an attractive tourism package.

He added that the tourism package would further promote and develop the town’s tourism industry.

“Through the tourism package, apart from food tourism, we can also promote other areas of tourism such as eco-tourism, educational tourism, agricultural tourism, religious tourism, health tourism and so on,” Wong said.

The 1Malaysia Food Fair from Nov 7 to 30 at Sibu Town Square Phase II features some 200 stalls.
