Survey finds NZ most accessible study destination

EDUCATION New Zealand (ENZ) has welcomed survey findings that showed international students from Asia and the Middle East believe that New Zealand is the most accessible study destination, supported by welcoming government policies.

A survey has revealed that international students from Asia and the Middle East believe New Zealand is the most accessible study destination.

The latest Buyer Behaviour research survey from global education agency IDP revealed international students thought New Zealand has the most welcoming government student visa policies, ahead of Canada, Australia, the US and UK.

In December last year, the New Zealand government made changes to the work rights of international students, making it easier for international students to work while studying.

For example, unlimited work rights have been given to international PhD and Master’s by research students, and more international students became eligible to work full-time during their holidays.

“New Zealand prides itself on its work-ready graduates. New Zealand qualifications are recognised globally and teaching methods emphasise hands-on experience as well as theory. Our education system encourages students to think creatively in a supportive environment,” said ENZ South and Southeast Asia regional director Ziena Jalil.

The survey of 1,000 students from Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, China, India, Bangladesh and Middle East also found that international students believe New Zealand is number one in terms of affordability and safety, alongside Canada.

“We were the first country in the world to introduce a Code of Pastoral Care for International Students, which institutions must sign up to in order to enrol international students. The Code provides numerous safeguards for students to ensure they receive a high quality education and experience in New Zealand,” said Jalil.

The survey also revealed that students believe studying overseas is worth the effort to gain better knowledge and skills than at home, a good job, and higher salaries.

“All of New Zealand’s eight universities ranked among the top three per cent of universities worldwide in the 2014 QS world rankings. For international students, it is this global recognition and portability of New Zealand’s qualifications that are keenly sought after,” added Jalil.
