KUCHING: The Sarawak Junior Golf First Association (SJGFA) will be fielding a team of 14 players in the Sarawak Chief Minister’s Cup 16th International Junior Golf Championship at the Sarawak Golf Club from Nov 16-18.

SJGFA coach Chih Ching Chuang said the competition is another good venue for his young charges to gain valuable experience and polish their skills.

“We are sending 10 boys and four girls to compete in this event which I think will benefit our golfers tremendously as they will be up against their counterparts from Thailand and Semenanjung Malaysia,” he said.

Out of the 14 players, five are making their debut appearance in one of the region’s most prestigious junior gold tournaments.

Competing in Boys B are Adam Muzaffar Abdul Rahman and Tristan Fong Tze Wei while the Boys C contenders are Donald Ho Guan Hui and Aiman Zulhari Othman. In Boys D, the golfers are Amirul Hakim Mohd Noorushaimy, Muhd Hadif Fathely, NurHazim Fikri Muazamir and his brother Nurhakim Fikri Muazamir, Aiman Hakim Mohd Sham and Kulleh Tajang.

Meanwhile, Martiana Chia Yun Ping and Nicole Wong Yen Ping will compete in Girls B while the Girls D contestants are Asha Nabeela Abdul Rahman and Rachel Shane.

Chih said although he is not setting any target for his players so as not to put any unnecessary pressure on them, he is hoping that they can enjoy their game and do well in the championship.

“We will continue to send the young players to local and state tournaments and if possible competitions outside Sarawak,” said Chih, adding that doing so was part of their continuous development programme.

Some of the SJGFA junior golfers have taken part in the Sarawak Amateur Junior Open golf championship in Bintulu and the KGM Junior Amateur Open Golf Championship (Datuk Sebastian Ting Challenge Trophy) in Miri this year.
