Tan to challenge Lee in men’s singles final

KUCHING: Top seed Lee Hyun Il overcame Malaysia’s Zulfadli Zulkiffli 21-17, 21-7 to enter the Men’s singles final of the Maybank Malaysia Kuching International Badminton Challenge 2014 at Stadium Perpaduan yesterday.

The 34 year old veteran, who was instrumental in South Korea upsetting China for last month’s Asian Games team title, will now face number two seed Malaysian Tan Chun Seang. Tan needed three sets to claim victory over Singaporean Ronald Susilo 11-21, 21-14, 21-19 to make the final.

No Malaysian player, however, will feature in the women’s singles final as the remaining two Malaysian contenders crashed out in the semi-finals .

Second seeded Chen Jiayuan of Singapore defeated fourth seeded Sannatasah Saniru in straight sets 21-11, 21-17 to advance to the final.

She will come up against Gregoria Mariska who continued her giant killing act yesterday by claiming third seeded Malaysian Yang Li Lian as her latest victim. But the Indonesian had to dig deep before winning 13-21, 21-17, 21-13 in their semi-final.

All finals will be held today.
