Illegal logger jailed, fined for bribery

SIBU: A 47-year-old man was yesterday sentenced by the Sessions Court here to 45 days in jail plus a RM10,000 fine after he pleaded guilty to corruption.

Law King Chai was charged under Section 17(b) of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2009 punishable under Section 24 of the same Act.

The section carries an imprisonment not exceeding 20 years and a fine not less than five times the sum or value of the gratification or RM10,000, whichever is higher.

Law committed the offence in a logging area at Selangau-Mukah Road at about 7pm on Sept 8.

He gave a police officer RM2,000 as inducement not to act against him for illegal logging.

In the same court, a 63-year-old man facing a similar charge will have his case brought up for further mention on Dec 10.

Lee Hock Liang was alleged to have given a police officer RM10,000 as inducement for not taking action against him for an alleged transfer of 300 logs without valid royalty declaration documents from Sarawak Forestry Department in Kanowit at about 2pm on April 25.
