KOTA KINABALU: The Sabah Police Contingent expects more Police Volunteer Reserve (PVR) personnel to be stationed at the East Sabah Safe Zone (ESSZone) to strengthen security in the areas there.

Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department chief Senior Assistant Commissioner Hamdan Majid said the move is to increase security level in those areas in the future.

“At the moment, we have recruited about 2,000 PVRs from Sabah but for ESSZone areas, recruitment will be carried out soon, which include local residents from rural areas,” he said after launching the Police Volunteer Reserve meeting with agencies at Tabung Haji Complex here yesterday.

The ceremony was officiated by Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jalaluddin Abd Rahman.

Meanwhile, Hamdan said there are more than 2,000 PVRs in Sabah and the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) is working closely with government and private sector agencies to recruit more people for the service.

“For the record, we have about 2,278 PVRs and there are still 1,975 vacancies to be filled,” he said, adding that Sabah’s quota are 4,253 recruits.

Hamdan added that the police would provide training for new recruits and urged who are interested to volunteer.

“Protecting our country is not only the job of the police but PVRs can also play their roles, under the requirement of the National Blue Ocean Strategy,” he said.
