MIRI: Marathon enthusiasts can mark April 12 on their next year’s calendar for the inaugural Miri Charity Run at Marina Park here.

Organised by Bulatan Park Runners Club in collaboration with Miri Mountain Bike Club and Lions Club of Batu Niah, the event is expecting over 1,000 participants.

Speaking at a press conference yesterday, organising chairman Ken Lai said the programmed aimed at promoting running not only as a hobby or exercise to all, but also in raising funds for Sarawak Children’s Cancer Society (SCCS) and Sarawak Cochlear Implant Foundation (SCIF).

Out of the registration fee of RM50 per person, Lai said RM10 and RM5 would respectively be channelled to SCCS and SCIF.

The event would be divided into nine categories, namely the 10km Men’s and Women’s Open, 10km Men’s and Women’s Veteran, 10km Boys and Girls, 3.5km Junior Boys and Girls, and the 3.5km Open Fun Run which should be perfect for marathon beginners.

“This category (Fun Run) is slated for cultivating their interest in running while slowly developing their capability to run longer distances,” Lai said, adding that registration would run from Nov 24 and close on March 9.

“Every participant is entitled to a free T-shirt, and those who successfully complete the whole distance of their respective categories would be awarded with uniquely-designed medals depicting the city’s mascot, the ‘seahorse’.

“For the Junior categories, each runner will get additional reward of a RM5 voucher sponsored by Toys World.

“We believed in giving away finisher’s medals alongside the main prizes as not only a way to draw higher turnouts, but also to give each participant a great memory,” he said.

Prizes for the top 10 runners in all categories would include cash and hampers.

The registration forms are available at Share Tea near Boulevard Commercial Centre, Bulatan Park’s canteen and the Grand Old Lady of Canada Hill. Even more convenient, Lai said, would be to download them via Bulatan Park Runners Club’s Facebook page.
