Sultanate Ranks 30th on HDI

BANGKOK, THAILAND: The continuous effort from the Government in improving the quality of life for the people and citizens of Brunei has ranked the country in the 30th position of the United Nations’ Human Development Index, ©BRUDIRECT.COM reported.

The satisfactory position is a manifestation of the effectiveness of the policies towards achieving the 2035 Vision. The Deputy Minister of Culture Youth and Sports highlighted these matters in her statement during the Asian and Pacific Countries Conference on the ‘Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment: Beijing +20 Review’ which was held in Bangkok, Thailand.

In a topic about women in particular, Yang Mulia Datin Paduka Hjh Adina Othman said the rapid development which occurred in this important field were being managed through the organisation structure of a special committee in the Family and Women Institution under the National Social Issues Council.

Through the eight main sectors, which were identified under the comprehensive Plan of Action, has given a guarantee towards the implementation of the project and the programme that will benefit the women in the country.

Datin Paduka Hajah Adina went on about how education served as a catalyst towards the improvement of skills for all parties including women and as a result of this; the Government has subsidies 13% of the country’s annual development to the education sector.

Datin Paduka Hajah Adina also shared on the country’s development in several inclusive fields that offers positive contribution to the women, which among others include the SPN 21 review recommendations, the suggestions to stretch the period for formal education and a special building for medical services for women and children which will start its operation in the coming future.

The conference ended with a Declaration of the Asian and Pacific Ministers which focussed on a resolution for impartiality, equality and women’s capability in global development.

The declaration touched on the commitment to carry out the matters outlined in the ‘Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action’, to overcome the weaknesses which are still faced today and tackling the challenges which has become a barrier towards its progress.
