Tagunggu Festival to revive Sungai Labuk cultural heritage

PAITAN: The Tagunggu Festival 2014 featuring the music and culture of the Sungai Labuk tribe is on for two days until today.

The annual event which has reached its ninth edition this year will be officiated by Assistant Local Government and Housing Minister, Datuk Zakaria Haji Mohd Edris today.

The festival aims to attract foreign and domestic tourists to Sungai Labuk’s traditional music arts which are still unexposed to the outside world.

It can be seen as a platform for the Sungai Labuk tribes to promote their cultural heritage.

Reintroducing traditional music and dance will also help to revive the Sungai Labuk heritage culture as well as enriching the country’s traditional culture.

Meanwhile, the assistant district officer of Paitan, Elias Abdul Hamid said the special attraction for Tagunggu Festival 2014 was the participation of the youths. He hopes the Sungai Labuk youths will preserve the art, culture and folk musical instruments through their participation.

Residents from nearby districts were also invited to the Festival to enliven the event with various competition and activities such as Miss (Ratu) Tagunggu, Mulagu contest, cooking competition and singing performances from Sungai Labuk singers.
