Trio sentenced to death for kidnapping woman for ransom

MELAKA: Three men, including an Indonesian, were sentenced to death by hanging by the High Court here yesterday after they were found guilty of kidnapping a woman in December 2009.

High Court judge Datuk Abdul Karim Abdul Jalil imposed the sentence on businessman Koh Chun Sen, 43, factory worker Lee Hee Wee, 41, and an Indonesian named Sahri, 29, after the prosecution had proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

The three accused were charged with detaining a woman, Goh Geok Hua, 34, with the intention of demanding for a ransom of RM300,000 from the victim’s husband, Ng Guan Kiat, 34.

The trio were accused of committing the offence at KS 1006, Jalan Kuala Damai 1, Taman Kuala Damai, Kuala Sungai Baru, Alor Gajah at 10 am on Dec 24, 2009.

They were charged under Section 3 of the Kidnapping Act 1961, which carries the mandatory death sentence or life imprisonment upon conviction.

Deputy public prosecutor Norhasmiza Othman appeared for the prosecution while Koh was represented by counsel Yusof Rahmat, Lee by counsel Hasshahari (Rpt : Hasshahari) Johari Mawi and Sahri by counsel Mohan Singh. — Bernama
