BUKIT MERTAJAM: A delegate at the Annual Penang DAP Convention took everyone by surprise when he questioned Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng on his decision to buy a car for official use when the previous car was still in good condition.

The  representative from Chai Leng Park, Seberang Perai, Shamsher Singh Thind said Guan Eng, who is also the secretary-general of the party, had criticised the Terengganu state government when they bought a similar model in 2008 but Guan Eng was doing the same under his administration.  “Guan Eng had bought himself a Mercedes Benz.

What has happened?” Shamsher asked at the convention’s debate, here yesterday.  The MP’s boldness to question issues related to the state government in the presence of Guan Eng caused a stir among the 309 delegates who were at the convention.

Shamsher, a law lecturer at a higher learning institution here also questioned the immunity offered to Guan Eng by enforcement officers of the Penang Municipal Council (MPPP).

“MPPP goes all out to tow away cars parked illegally by members of the public, including college students, but when the Chief Minister’s car is parked at non-designated spaces, MPPP would choose to ignore,” he said.

However, Guan Eng who is DAP state chairman said he would instruct the council to issue a summon to his driver if he had parked haphazardly.

Guan Eng meanwhile blamed the media for allegedly exaggerating small issues and publishing biased reports related to him.  “When I talk on matters which are more important, the media do not report it at all.

“They would however, make a big story out of small issues like my new car,” he said.

The Penang DAP also supported Petaling Jaya Utara member of parliament Tony Pua for not offering an apology for his statement over the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) about its investment.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak had issued a letter of demand to Tony Pua over personal attacks against his character that are deemed to be defamatory.

The prime minister is demanding Tony Pua issue an apology and retract his statements within 14 days. — Bernama
