Liu Thian Leong elected UPP Batu Kawa branch chief

KUCHING: Pemanca Liu Thian Leong was elected to lead the United People’s Party (UPP) Batu Kawa branch during its inaugural annual general meeting yesterday.

In his opening address, Liu set two goals – raise RM1 million for SM Min Lit Batu Kawa and RM500,000 for SJK Chung Hua Stapok.

He said politics was never about personal interest or agenda hence reaching out to Chinese schools would be a meaningful way of serving the community.

As of yesterday, the branch had recruited many members, he revealed.

“We expect the number to increase substantially after we set up the office. more than 70 per cent of members are young, middle-aged and enthusiastic new faces.”

Liu pointed out the branch would draw up some long-term plans to serve the grassroots with the ultimate aim of recouping confidence from the ground, especially the Chinese.

Branch committee members and members were expected to visit villages to mingle with and render assistance to locals, he said.

“I am confident through sincere service we can win back the people particularly the Chinese,” he said.

Liu’s deputy is Bong Lim Fatt. The five elected vice-chairmen are Pui Wen Mei, Bong Sai Ing@Sai Jin, John Pata James Jumin, Stanley Ng and Chang Siaw Ling.

Christine Bong was named secretary assisted by assistant secretaries Chang Hon Kong and Allen Hii.

Treasurer is Chong Thian Poh while organising secretary Peter Chang, assistant organising secretary Chung Nyuk Kie, publicity secretary Fong Foot Khiong, assistant publicity secretary Lui Siew Peng, training secretary Chang Yong Meng, assistant training secretary Chong Mui Hiong, welfare secretary Chai Jun Chen and assistant welfare secretary Lee Boo Hiong.

The committee members are Leo Yong Jin, Tiong Yun Foo, Lee Chui Yuan, Chong Ah Ted and Ting Kwan Sheng.
