1,000 youths expected at International Volunteers’ Day do

MIRI: Miri City Council (MCC) and iM4U (a youth volunteer movement) are calling on 1,000 youths to take part in the International Volunteer’s Day 2014 programme at Kampung Tunku Abdul Rahman (TAR) Lambir this Dec 6.

MCC event committee chairman Cr Keith Chin said the programme will be from 8am to 3pm, and involves a ‘gotong-royong’ (work party) at Rumah Panjang Linggie.

“The one-day programme will involve spring cleaning, painting, tree planting as well as environmental talks,” he said yesterday.

Chin invites participation from youth organisations, associations as well as schools to make the international celebration a success.

“Interested members of the public can register their names at iM4U website www.iM4U.my or get the forms at MCC Local Agenda 21 office,” he said.

Meanwhile, Faruq Iskandar from Brand Management Group iM4U Kuala Lumpur said Miri was one of the 15 locations in the country chosen as campaign venue to achieve the target of 100,000 volunteer hours nationwide.

“It is important for us to change the youths’ mindset that they too are capable of making positive transformation for the community,” he added.

To date, more than 500 youths from the area have confirmed their participation in the programme which with registration closing on Nov 28.

Each volunteer will receive a T-shirt from the organiser. The organiser will also provide transportation to Lambir from MCC office starting at 7am.

All participants are required to gather at Rh Jarek, Lambir for registration that day.

The International Volunteers’ Day is an opportunity for volunteers and volunteer organisations to raise awareness of and gain recognition for the contribution they make to the community.
