MARUDI: Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau recently advised the Orang Ulu community living along the logging road from Miri to Bario Highlands to set up stalls along the road for selling jungle produce and other products to passersby.

By doing so, he said they would be able to earn cash income which would help uplift their standard of living.

Travelling along the road from Miri to SK Long Miri in Central Baram to officiate at the school’s Excellence Award presentation and Sri Melati Pre-School convocation ceremony, which took him six hours to reach, he said he was happy to note that some enterprising longhouse folks had set up canteens along the road to sell food and drinks.

Meanwhile, at the function besides presenting the ‘Best Student of the Year’ and the ‘Best Co-curriculum Student’ awards, Dennis also gave away awards to the top three students in every class from Primary 1 to 6.

The ‘Best Academic Pupil’ award went to Mariana Thomas and the ‘Best Co-curriculum Student’ award to Josphine Joseph, who represented Baram Division in the Inter-Primary School MSSR Carnival in Miri and a gold medallist at the state-level MSSR competition.

The best and cleanliness class of the year was Primary One.

SK Long Miri has 100 pupils, 13 teachers and two support staff.

The pupils are mostly Kayan.

Present were school headmaster Ali Aton, Cr Jau Eng Aran, the school’s PTA deputy chairman Wan Ngau and TK Tinggang Pahang.
