KUCHING: A convicted rapist was arrested by police after he was caught trespassing into a house at Heights North in Jalan Song here.

The 28-year-old suspect from Kampung Tabuan Melayu was spotted climbing over the gate of the unattended house around noon on Tuesday by a nearby resident, who immediately contacted the owner and alerted the police.

A police patrol team immediately sped to the location and, with the help of several neighbours, cordoned the house and apprehended the suspect as he attempted to flee.

District police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad said the unemployed suspect had previously been jailed for rape.

“The suspect was subjected to a urine test and found to be positive for drug abuse.

He is currently being held in the lockup and will be remanded for further investigation.”

In a separate incident, a university student suffered cuts to his stomach and shoulder following a scuffle with an armed intruder at his rented house at Bukit Berangan in Muara Tuang yesterday.

The 22-year-old victim from the peninsula was alone in the house, which he shared with several university mates, when he came face-to-face with the stranger who was carrying a knife in the living room around 9am.

The pair was said to have briefly scuffled with each other before the intruder grabbed the student’s mobile phone and wallet and ran out of the house, where a male accomplice was waiting on a motorcycle.

The student then realised he had sustained a cut to the left side of his stomach and on his shoulder.

He then contacted a house mate for help.

An ambulance later took the victim to the Sarawak General Hospital, where he was given outpatient treatment.
