Sarawak maintains excellent record in UPSR

KUCHING: Sarawak maintained its excellent achievement in the Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) 2014 results when it recorded a state average grade (GPN) of 2.52 when the results were unveiled yesterday.

The GPN was the same as last year’s, which was the best since 2003.

State education director Serina Sauni revealed that this year, 116 schools in the state achieved 100 per cent pass in the exam, saying 108 of them were Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) while eight were Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan Cina (SJKC).

This is a significant increment of 32 schools as last year only 84 schools achieved 100 per cent pass in all subjects. In English, UPSR is Primary School Assessment Test.

She also revealed that a total of 44 schools achieved a pass rate of 90 to 99.9 per cent while 165 achieved a pass rate of 80 to 89.9 per cent this year.

Last year, only 37 schools achieved a pass rate of 90 to 99.9 per cent, while 135 others achieved a pass rate of 80 to 89.9 per cent.

She mentioned that this year, 4.41 per cent or 1,862 pupils out of 42,176 candidates from government and government aided schools scored straight As in all subjects sat for, compared with 4.49 per cent or 1,916 out of 42,665 candidates from government and government aided schools last year.

“This shows a decline of 0.08 per cent. Out of the 1,862 pupils, 1,362 are from SK and 500 from SJKC.

“SK shows a minimal decline of 0.01 per cent which is from 4.34 per cent in 2013 to 4.33 per cent this year, while SJKC shows a decline of 0.27 per cent which is from 4.95 per cent in 2013 to 4.68 per cent this year,” said Serina who made the announcement at the State Education Department yesterday.

Minister of Welfare, Family and Women Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah was also present.

A total of 42,176 pupils sat for the examination in the State this year.

Out of this number, 31,491 (74.67 per cent) were candidates from SK and 10,685 (25.33 per cent) from SJKC.
