Teacher killed in Membakut collision

MEMBAKUT: A primary school teacher succumbed to his injuries in a road accident at Km 19.5, Beaufort/Papar Road near Kampung Pimping here yesterday morning.

Awang Hamid Awang Chuchu, 48, from Kampung Pimping died at the Membakut Hospital several hours after the Proton Wira car he was travelling in collided with an Isuzu D-Max vehicle around 6am.

It is learnt that the victim was heading to Papar from Beaufort while the Isuzu D-Max driver, in his 30s, was on the opposite lane.

Both victims were initially trapped at their driver’s seat and it took several minutes for the Beaufort Fire and Rescue Services personnel to free them.

However, Awang Hamid was pronounced dead while being treated at the intensive care unit several hours later.

Meanwhile, Beaufort police chief DSP Mustaffa Maarof Mustaffa confirmed the incident and said police were still investigating.

He added that the D-Max driver was still being treated at the hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.

Mustaffa said the case was currently being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and urged eyewitness to come forward to assist them in their investigation.
