LABUAN: Two new cases of leptospirosis were reported in Labuan, involving students of Labuan Matriculation College (LMC) two weeks ago.

Confirming this today Labuan Health Department director Dr Ismail Ali said the students were treated as outpatients and have returned to their studies.

“They have been confirmed to have contracted leptospirosis, we suspected they were infected at the college,” he told Bernama here yesterday.

He said the two students from Sipitang, Sabah were treated at the Sipitang general hospital and in stable condition.

An 18-year-old female student of the college from Bintulu, Sarawak died from suspected leptospirosis late last month, prompting the department to closely monitor the situation at the college. The LMC has about 2,600 students and the six operators take turns to run the three cafes at the college.

LMC director Sawang@Rezal Amit said following the new cases, cleanliness programmes were intensified on suspected rat breeding grounds in the vicinity of the college. — Bernama
