SIBU: The signature campaign asking Sibu Municipal Council to rename Sibu Hospital Road to Jalan Lau King Howe kicked off at Sibu Town Square yesterday.

Lau King Howe was a philanthropist who built the first hospital here. The campaign is coordinated by Bawang Assan, Nangka, Bukit Assek, Dudong, and Pelawan branches of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP ).

The organisers hoped to garner 10,000 signatures calling for the road to be named after Lau King Howe.

SUPP Sibu branch chairman Chieng Buong Toon said on Wednesday night the drive was to let the voices of the people be heard by those in authority.

“We believe that the road must be named after Lau King Howe. We do not support the late Lau because he was a Chinese, but because of his contribution to the people of Sibu,” Chieng pointed out.
