KENINGAU: A 24-year-old man received 80 stitches on his body after he was beaten by five men with liquor bottles at an entertainment centre here.

District police chief DSP Douglas Nyeging Taong said the incident happened on November 17 around 11.20pm when the victim from Sipitang had inadvertently stared at the faces of five local men drinking at a table in the entertainment centre.

“A fight broke out in the entertainment centre and spilled into the compound of a hotel nearby in full view of the public,”he said.

Speaking at a press conference in his office here yesterday, Douglas said the victim received treatment at the Keningau Hospital and was reported to be in stable condition. Following the incident, a 21-year-old local man was arrested on November 20 and remanded for five days to facilitate police investigations into the case under Section 148 of the Penal Code which is punishable with imprisonment of up to two years, or a fine or both.

In a separate case, Douglas said that the police arrested a local man, aged 22, at Kampung Pinipi Lanas in Sook on November 23 after a four-year-old girl was injured in the left eye after reportedly being shot by marbles.

“The incident happened on November 20 about 3pm at the residence of the little girl,”he said.

He said the police got wind of the incident when the child’s face went viral through WhatsApp even though her mother had not lodged a police report of the incident.

Douglas said the child is now out of danger after surgery at the Likas Hospital in Kota Kinabalu.

According to him, the police have seized four suspected gun components believed used to shoot the marbles and arrested a local man, who has since been released on police bail after being remanded for four days to facilitate investigations under Section 8 of Weapons Act 1960, which is punishable with imprisonment not exceeding seven years or a fine not exceeding RM10,000 or both.
