GEORGE TOWN: The bail period for 157 members of the Penang Voluntary Patrol (PPS) which ended yesterday would not be extended.

Timur Laut district police chief ACP Mior Faridalathrash Wahid said this was because the Attorney-General’s (AG) Chambers had returned the investigation papers and had asked the police to insert additional input to complete the investigation report.

“The bail period for all the PPS members will not be extended and they can be called at any time to facilitate the investigation. We have received several new orders from the AG’s Chambers to complete the investigation.

“…whether they will be charged or not depends on the instruction from the AG Chambers,” he told Bernama when contacted, here yesterday.

On Oct 29, police extended the bail period for the 157 PPS members for a second time (ends today), after the first 30-day bail was issued on Sept 30.

Earlier, PPS deputy chairman Ng Wei Aik, who is also Tanjong Member of Parliament, said they would file an application for a judicial review on the High Court’s decision that declared PPS as an illegal society, soon.

He said, right now, all PPS members, would be laid off while waiting for further action.

“Today is the last day we came to report ourselves after the 90-day bail period, but the authorities have yet to make any decision concerning our detention,” he said.

On Aug 31, 154 members of the PPS were arrested for continuing their activity after the police had declared PPS to be illegal because it was not registered with the Registrar of Societies.

PPS chairman Phee Boon Poh, who is also the State Welfare, Caring Society and Environment Committee chairman, was also detained on the same day, followed by Seri Delima assemblyman RSN Rayer, on the following day and Wei Aik, on Sept 4. — Bernama
