LIMBANG: Road Transport Department (JPJ) will roll out new laws and policies for vehicle screen tinting which take effect on May 1, 2015 nationwide.

Limbang JPJ branch chief Morshidi Rosli advised owners to get their vehicles checked by the department before enforcement of the new law next year.

“Public awareness on the vehicle check-up is still lacking. Vehicle owners who come to do their screen tinted percentage check at our department is still low,” he said yesterday.

Moreover, Morshidi said, JPJ will continue to conduct daily roadblock operations and at the same time create awareness on the new ruling for next year.

“We will conduct the operation in the district with the cooperation of Malaysian Royal Police (PDRM),” he added.

Earlier, JPJ director general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad, was quoted to have said that the new implementation of Visible Light Transmission (VLT) for rear windscreen and rear passenger windows are 30 per cent, down from the current 50 per cent.

The VLT for the front windscreen and the driver’s window remains at 70 per cent and 50 per cent respectively, he stated.

Motorists who fail to observe the new regulation would be fined RM300 and if the case was brought to court, they could face a fine up to RM1,000 or two weeks’ jail, or both.

The new regulation applies to all vehicles in the country, under the Motor Vehicle (Prohibition of Certain Types of Glass) Rules 1991.
