KOTA SAMARAHAN: The Innovation, Career and Education Fair 2014 hosted by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) attracted more than 20 exhibitors from private and government-linked companies.

The event which will be held until tomorrow in DeTAR Putra Unimas is to provide students the opportunity to interact and engage with participating companies.

“Our students will also be able to obtain first-hand information from prospective employers,” said Unimas deputy vice-chancellor (students affairs and alumni) Professor Fadzil Abdul Rahman who officiated at the launching ceremony yesterday.

He said the event is a perfect opportunity for students to gain inside knowledge and position themselves strategically for jobs they are keen to pursue.

“Facilitation by these companies will also help students develop better learning and communication strategies to achieve the expectations of the job market,” he added.

Besides the exhibition, job interviews are conducted on the sidelines to provide companies a chance to know potential candidates while they are still studying.

On another matter, he said Unimas managed to bag three gold, two silver and one bronze at the recent Seoul International Invention Fair 2014.

One of the gold medals, he said, was for the production of sugar from sago ‘hampas’ under the Industrialised Biotechnology-based Research category.

In October, Unimas also prevailed by winning four gold and four bronze at the British Invention Show which clearly reflects its continuous effort in research and exploitation of the state’s natural resources.

Among the participating companies at the fair are Sapura Kencana, Infineon, MDEC, Graduan Tokuyama, Schlumberger, Excel Mind, Talent Corp, Uzma, HGST, Instep, Toyota, KM, DiGi, Shell, Mitsubishi, JX Nippon, Ghee Hua Co Sdn Bhd, Human Resources Department and Bintulu Port.
