South Kalimantan fisheries potential intrigues East Java entrepreneurs

BANJARMASIN, South Kalimantan: East Java fishery entrepreneurs are intrigue by the potential of fishery farms of South Kalimantan for export market, Antaranews reported.

Business and Investment Section Chief of South Kalimantan Fisheries Agency, Muhammad Aini, in Banjarmasin on Wednesday, said the businessmen from the East Java want to invest in export quality fish farming, especially milkfish.

Land prepared for the development of the fisheries sector is quite extensive and this attracts East Java fish entrepreneurs to make investments with local fish rearers for the farming of milkfish and other species.

Provincial and district governments in South Kalimantan help to facilitate the entrepreneurs to cooperate with the fishermen for pond management and post-harvest handling up to marketing.

The high investor interest in South Kalimantan, said Aini, is due to the potential of marine fisheries sector and fishing while aquaculture is quite widespread and not labour intensive.

Eight businessmen from East Java fishery industry were ready to disburse funds and help the fish breeding ponds and were ready to handle the total pond production volume for export.

South Kalimantan  has 1,331,091 kilometres long coastline,  48 identified islands besides Pulau Laut and four deltas.

Pulau Laut (Sea Island) is the largest island in the region of Kalimantan and has a coastline of 480 kilometres.
